The head is natural skin, while the ipe bridge is a custom Doc's brand made for this particular instrument. The tailpiece is a "Doc's Modified No-Knot."

The banjo uses several exotic woods, and has some unique features.

The scooped fingerboard is cocobolo. Note the lateral, shelf-like extension of the fingerboard adjoining the scoop, comprising Doc's "Frailing Platform," for the thumb. The overlay from the bone nut to the 5th-7th frets is bronze, and is recessed into the fingerboard, so there is no drop off.

The five-piece neck is predominantly myrtlewood, with a wenge center stripe bordered by bilinga. |

The 12-inch block pot is primarily myrtlewood, and uses Doc's "Trussed Tone Pot" design: you can see how the stressed areas at the neck and tailpiece are thicker than the edges of the rim. The top edge has been shaped into an integral tone rim.
