[I suggest simply asking to play a tune again, but slower...this is a friendly
crowd...dbz]

"I was probably the least experienced person you had there
last night, but I did pickup a few tips.  I realized that I still
have a long way to go before I am ready to play with those guys
and girls that were there last night..." 
[Not necessarily on either count..  I'd bet there were several others
who felt they were the "least experienced."  Similarly, as soon as you 
can play anything, you'll be ready to play along!...dbz]
