ca. 1890s S.S. Stewart "Pony" banjo
This 21-inch scale old-timer is a player's instrument--it's set up with nylgut strings, and is great for playing in B or C (assuming the equivalent of an open G tuning-gDGBD, of course).
All-in-all, this is surely not a collector's piece, but it is a fun old banjo for a player, priced as such at $750, with no case.

The traditional S.S.S. peghead has handsome inlay.
| |
60% of the friction tuners have the original ivoroid buttons.
The heel has the all-too-common (repaired) crack caused by someone's trying to lower the action by over-tightening the stabilizing turnbuckle... *sigh*
| |
Some time over the past century or so, someone did a little after-market heel carving.
The peghead has been broken and repaired, so from the back, it looks as if it has at least one "ear."
The metal on the spun-over, 10-inch pot could use some polishing.
It has at least 6 replacement bracket nuts and at least 5 replacement brackets.
it also has 3 replacement bracket shoes, so I don't think I'd go to any trouble polishing things...
It has a 10-inch, spun over pot.
The little ivoroid "S.S. Stewart" label is missing from the dowel stick. On the up-side, the modern No-Knot tailpiece is nice and shiny...
