{"id":35,"date":"2015-07-31T18:19:40","date_gmt":"2015-07-31T18:19:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zeppmusic.com\/Wordpress\/?p=35"},"modified":"2015-07-31T18:19:40","modified_gmt":"2015-07-31T18:19:40","slug":"the-curious-thing-others-call-an-aspo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zeppmusic.com\/Wordpress\/2015\/07\/31\/the-curious-thing-others-call-an-aspo\/","title":{"rendered":"The Curious Thing Others Call an \u201cASPO\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The term \u201cAlternate String Pull-Off\u201d (ASPO) was, as far I can tell, coined by Ken Perlman and received wide audience* with his publication of <i>Clawhammer Style Banjo <\/i>(an excellent book, BTW, one which I highly recommend).<\/p>\n<p>I, though, do not use the term &#8220;ASPO&#8221; in my teaching, and I shall now take a moment to explain just why that is!<\/p>\n<p>First of all, let\u2019s define our basic terminology: \u00a0a \u201cpull-off\u201d is a common, colloquial term for what the classical world calls \u201cleft-hand pizzicato,\u201d i.e. plucking an instrument\u2019s string with the noting hand. \u00a0Thus, for right-handed players, we\u2019re speaking of picking a string with the<em> left<\/em> hand.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, one does a pull-off by fretting a string, plucking it with the right hand, and then plucking it again by pulling the left hand&#8217;s fretting finger to the side, sounding the open string (or a lower fretted note on that string).<\/p>\n<p>This video shows a pull-off done on the banjo&#8217;s first string: first I fret the string at the 2nd fret and strike it with the right hand. \u00a0Then, I snap my finger off that string, sounding the 1st string open (the tablature is below the video):<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k4ZB8AfRz7Y\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/zeppmusic.com\/Wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pull1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-38\" src=\"https:\/\/zeppmusic.com\/Wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pull1-300x145.gif\" alt=\"pull1\" width=\"300\" height=\"145\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is where that \u201calternate string\u201d term comes from, i.e., instead of pulling-off the string plucked by the right hand, one pulls-off a string that was <i>not<\/i> struck by the right hand. \u00a0In this video, I am sounding the <em>3rd<\/em> string open, and then pulling-off the <em>1st<\/em> string from the 2nd fret. \u00a0Here, too, tab follows:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RI1suzJ6nkc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/zeppmusic.com\/Wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/crisp.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-41\" src=\"https:\/\/zeppmusic.com\/Wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/crisp-300x140.gif\" alt=\"crisp\" width=\"300\" height=\"140\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the 1st string is pulled to sound the open string, it follows that it does not matter from which fret the string is pulled&#8211;you\u2019re going to hear the open string!
